Voices Supporting DACA

Marching with our handmade sign to the Boulder City Council meeting we chanted, “tell me what democracy looks like, this is what democracy looks like.” We were going to show our support for an ordinance to support DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation and allows them to work and attend school. We departed at the end of our Vocal Empowerment session, during which time we had practiced singing “We the people, in order to form a more perfect union establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and those who dare to dream, we support all the dreamers and their education in these United States of America.” Upon arrival at the city council meeting, we stood along one wall with our sign and sang our song for those assembling for the meeting. Once the meeting was to begin, the mayor of Boulder asked us to sing it again at the beginning of the broadcast meeting. Once we left the room, we were interviewed by our local radio station KGNU and were included in the morning edition the next day. It is incredible how many people we were able to reach with that one single action.
